$345Encaustic is wonderful for collage because of the ability to build up translucent layers, remove and reposition elements, and create dreamy compositions! In this course, we explore different ways of building up those layers in encaustic and mixed media as well as working in a series and working on multiple panels at once. We’ll be working with papers, images, wax-friendly mixed media materials, and even dimensional objects. This beginner-friendly class offers both new and experienced students a formula for developing their encaustic paintings and is a great way to understand “thinking in layers.” And I cover topics not included in my encaustic comprehensive – including materials you can use on the panel BEFORE you add wax and incorporating dimensional elements like keys, rocks, or costume jewelry into your work.
On the first day, students will start with four 8×8 cradled panels and will begin by intuitively creating backgrounds using encaustic-friendly paint, glue, and collage materials directly on the panels. Next, we’ll add layers of clear encaustic medium and start to develop the composition and establish a focal point by adding in layers of both translucent and opaque encaustic paints, collage, and image transfer – all while working to both conceal and reveal the background layer. Students will be encouraged to work on all four panels at once, developing works that (might possibly) feel related.
On the second day, we’ll cover multiple techniques for adding dimensional objects – this includes everything from buttons and seedpods to branches and matchbox cars. I’ll also cover adding some mixed media elements like oil sticks and pan pastels to highlight elements of the piece.
